Refurbished Tech

In order to celebrate eBay's 25th year of operation, the e-commerce giant launched a special campaign dubbed '#eBayedits.' The activation was intended to connect shoppers on the platform with Canada's top tastemakers and their curated selections of goods. This resulted in expansive lists of hand-picked products, spanning categories of fashion, home décor, culinary, tech, auto, collectibles, and sneakers.

The tech section—perhaps one of the more popular categories today as consumers are gradually opening up to the convenience and efficiency technology can afford them—was curated by Amber Mac who started her career during the dot-com boom. With much experience working with start-ups, as well as tech giants like Microsoft, Amber started her own digital agency in 2006 and has since then built an impressive roster of clients.

For #eBayedits, Amber curated a list of her favorite personal and home tech products and Trend Hunter had the opportunity to talk to the professional about the benefits of refurbished tech, the potential of e-commerce platforms like eBay in this space, and the tech industry at large.

As a tech specialist, could you tell us a little bit about where the industry is now and where it is headed? 

In the technology space, we’re seeing an acceleration that is happening faster than many of us imagined. While we’ve been talking about emerging technologies for many years, such as AI and AR as two examples, we’re witnessing their rapid adoption in the consumer technology sector as their many benefits are proving to be essential in our lives. From voice-activated speakers to healthcare training, it’s clear we are already living in a very fast future.

Could you elaborate on your partnership with eBay Canada and why you chose to be part of #eBayEdits?

I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. I’ve understood since elementary school what it meant to build a small business—the grit, the dedication, the challenges. When eBay Canada approached me to be part of their #eBayEdits campaign, I was excited to play a part in promoting sellers on their platform—sellers who are running their own businesses one sale at a time.

What are your favorite items from the campaign and why did you choose them? 

My favourite item from a Canadian seller is the Blue Snowball Microphone, which is an affordable and professional mic for content creators (and it’s something I use almost every day). Plus, I recommend many smart home products, such as the Philips SOMENO sleep and wake-up light.

What are the benefits of refurbished tech and do you think it is important for consumers to consider it more as an option when making a purchase?

Although there are many new electronics on eBay, for consumers who are on a budget, it’s essential that they understand that refurbished technology is an excellent option. Whether you’re shopping for your child, a parent, or even yourself, not only does refurbish technology cost less, it’s also a win in terms of sustainability and the planet.

What do reselling platforms like eBay bring to the market that conventional tech stores can't?

What you will find on eBay are options that don’t exist at other conventional retailers. When it comes to technology, you can find everything from a decades-old gaming console to the latest and greatest smartphone.
